Long Journey Home Artist Statement

Long Journey Home discusses an Appalachian home funeral.  It is an installation that welcomes people into a space reminiscent of the funerals I’ve attended.  It’s filled with flowers, notes to the deceased, and places to rest and consider the influence of the deceased  The space contains three sections discussing my long journey through life, in my past as a young unmarried woman, the present as I become married and look towards children, and my hope for the future that I will become an older and wiser woman.  These stages of life have been laid out for me by the generations of women who have come before me and loved me.  The work is very much so in honor of them.

Special thanks to Alex, Brenna, Andrew, Jon, Faith, Mercy, Carlos, and Ellen for all your hard work to make this exhibition possible
